Green Zone Mentorship Training
Empowering SAC Faculty & Staff to Support Military-Connected Students
The San Antonio College (SAC) Veteran Affairs Office in the Victory Center provides Green Zone Training to faculty and staff to enhance their understanding of the unique challenges military-connected students face.
This training equips SAC employees with the knowledge, tools, and resources to better assist veterans, active-duty service members, reservists, National Guard members, and military dependents in their transition to academic success.
What is a Green Zone Mentor?
Faculty and staff who complete this training will be identified as Green Zone Mentors, signaling to military-connected students that they are a trusted point of contact for guidance, support, and connection to available resources.
What Faculty & Staff Will Learn:
- Understanding Military-Affiliated Students – Who they are, their demographics, and their diverse backgrounds.
- Military Experience & Transition Challenges – The impact of deployment, separation from family, and reintegration into civilian and academic life.
- Strengths of Veteran & Military Students – Work ethic, leadership skills, and adaptability in academic settings.
- Supporting Students with PTSD, TBI & Disabilities – Recognizing signs and providing appropriate classroom accommodations.
- Effective Communication & Support Strategies – What to say (and what not to say) to military-connected students.
- Navigating VA Education Benefits & Resources – Helping students understand financial aid, residency, and advising.
- Campus & Community Resources – Connecting students with academic support, counseling, and veterans’ services.
Green Zone Training Matters
SAC serves over 2,200 military-connected students, many of whom are non-traditional students balancing family, work, and school. Some may have disabilities, face deployment-related challenges, or struggle to adjust to academic life.
By becoming a Green Zone Mentor, you help create an inclusive and supportive environment where these students can thrive.
